Location: Edible Forest Garden, Berwick Hills, Middlesbrough
Hours: 8 hours/week (one day/week)
Contract: Fixed-term, 2 years
Salary: £20 per hour (£7,680 per year, based on 48 weeks per year)
Total salary over two years: £15,360
Reports to: Project Lead
About the Edible Forest Garden:
The Edible Forest Garden is a thriving, community-led initiative in Berwick Hills, Middlesbrough, transforming neglected land into a welcoming green space for food growing, wellbeing, environmental learning and social connection. The project has been growing steadily, with a youth group, regular workshops, more volunteers and support from a range of funders and local partners. Working closely with residents, schools and community organisations, we are creating a space where people can connect, learn new skills and contribute to improving their neighbourhood. We are now looking for a Community Coordinator to help us build on this momentum.
About the Role:
The Community Coordinator will work one day a week to provide the coordination, communication and community outreach needed to support the continued development of the Edible Forest Garden. The role will focus on keeping activities organised, supporting volunteers, maintaining relationships with local residents and partner organisations, and creating opportunities for more people to become involved. The Coordinator will work closely with the project team, volunteers and partners to support the delivery of activities at the Edible Forest Garden.
Key responsibilities:
- The Coordinator will work alongside the project team, volunteers and partner organisations and will not be expected to deliver activities independently. The role will focus on coordination, facilitation, community engagement and supporting others to contribute.
- Volunteer support: Welcome and support volunteers, organise volunteer days, communicate opportunities and help create a positive volunteering experience.
- Community outreach: Build relationships with local residents and organisations, support outreach activities and help engage people who may be isolated or experiencing disadvantage.
- Activities and events: Help coordinate workshops, youth activities, volunteer sessions and community events, working alongside volunteers and partners.
- Partnerships and communication: Maintain relationships with local organisations, schools and community groups, and help promote activities through community networks and social media.
- Administration: Maintain a simple activity calendar, coordinate communications and keep basic records of activities, volunteers and participation.
- Monitoring and evaluation: Collect participant numbers and feedback and contribute to documenting the project's community and environmental impact.
- Safeguarding: Follow relevant safeguarding and health and safety procedures, complete required training and help ensure activities are safe and inclusive.
Person Specification:
Essential:
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience of working with or supporting people in a community, voluntary, educational or similar setting.
- Ability to build positive relationships with residents, volunteers and partner organisations.
- Good organisation and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and use initiative.
- Reliability and confidence in communicating with different groups of people.
- Commitment to inclusion and community-led approaches.
- Willingness to work outdoors and in a community garden environment.
Desirable:
- Experience of community outreach.
- Experience of working with volunteers.
- Experience of organising community activities or events.
- Experience of working with children or young people.
- Knowledge of Berwick Hills or the surrounding area.
- Experience of social media or community communications.
- Experience of monitoring or evaluating community projects.
Qualifications and training:
No specific degree or higher education qualification is required.
The successful candidate will be expected to complete relevant training as part of the role, including:
- Safeguarding
- First Aid
- Food Hygiene
